Herschel Walker Running For Senate In Georgia
Former college football star Herschel Walker is running to become a U.S. senator from Georgia.
The Heisman Trophy winner filed paperwork on Tuesday establishing his campaign, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. An announcement is expected over the next few days, the outlet reported.
Walker, a friend of former President Donald Trump who has no experience in public office, will face off next year against incumbent Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock in what is expected to be among the most competitive Senate races in the United States.
Warnock defeated Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler in a special runoff election on Jan. 5 to finish out the term of former Sen. Johnny Isakson, who retired in 2019 for health reasons.
Trump began publicly and frequently encouraging a run from Walker, a University of Georgia alumnus with supreme name recognition in the state, after Loeffler’s loss to Warnock and former Republican Sen. David Perdue’s simultaneous defeat by Jon Ossoff gave Georgia two Democratic senators.
The political relationship between the former president and the former Celebrity Apprentice contender has been somewhat symbiotic over the past year.
Walker spoke during the Republican National Convention last August in support of Trump’s candidacy, defending the then-president from charges of racism and reflecting on their friendship by drawing analogies between Trump’s approach to public life and his own playing style.
“Some people don’t like his style, the way he knocks down obstacles that get in the way of his goals,” Walker said during his convention speech. “People on the opposing team didn’t like when I ran over them either, but that’s how you get the job done. I pray every night that God gives him more time. Give him four more years.”
Trump later began proffering Walker as a formidable opponent to Warnock, saying in a June interview it “would be very, very hard to beat Herschel.”
“They love him in Georgia. I’ll tell you. He was the greatest running back in the history of the state … He is a fantastic guy, and they love him,” Trump said.
Walker had hinted this day would eventually come for several months, with the Washington Examiner reporting in June he was talking with advisers and attorneys about how to get into the race. He also asserted at the time that he was “looking at the race closely.”
Prior to Walker’s entry into the race, polling suggested he’d be a formidable contender in the competitive state. A March poll from the Trafalgar Group showed the former football star edging out Warnock 47.7% to 45.5%.
Although Walker has high name recognition, Republican operatives in Georgia reportedly question whether he has the political acumen to out-compete Warnock, fretting about intra-party divisions over Trump’s role in the GOP.
