Die Jew: Jewish Family Visiting South Florida Harassed, Pelted With Trash While Walking
A Jewish family of three visiting South Florida from their home state of New Jersey earlier this week were accosted by a group of men allegedly shouting antisemitic attacks.
“They pulled up and started shouting, ‘Free Palestine, f— you Jew, die Jew,” Eric Orgen said Friday, via the Miami Herald.
On social media, Orgen said he, his wife, and his daughter were walking along Collins Avenue in Bal Harbour when an SUV pulled up next to them and the people inside began to hurl insults — and physical objects.
“They also said, ‘We’re going to rape your daughter. We’re going to rape your wife.’ Who yells that?” he added. “They then threw garbage at us out the window, as well as a water bottle.”
“I made sure my wife, my daughter, and our friend were behind me, so that if anything happened, I would take the brunt of it,” he said. “I was going to protect my family.”
The incident could have escalated further, Orgen speculated, if it were not for a stranger’s intervention.
“A man in an Audi right behind them who witnessed this pulled his gun to protect us and chased them as they drove away,” he wrote. “So thankful that a total stranger stepped up to protect us!”
The Orgen family were vacationing in Bal Harbour as the Jewish holiday Shavuot, also known as the “Feast of Weeks,” came to an end Tuesday.
Orgen says the actions constitute a “hate crime,” and the Miami Herald reports Bal Harbour Police Chief Raleigh Flowers confirmed there is an investigation with “very good investigative leads” to identify those involved.
“We want all of our visitors and residents to be safe,” he added. “It’s unfortunate in 2021 that we still have these kinds of incidents happening in our country.”
Bal Harbour Mayor Gabriel Groisman similarly pointed to the importance of penalizing and stopping such behaviors.
The city will “respond in a very strong fashion to these kinds of incidents because we don’t want South Florida to become New York or Los Angeles or anywhere else where these attacks are far worse,” he said.
“We have to stop them in their tracks,” Groisman said. “There is no question that they were intentionally trying to intimidate and harass the Jewish community.”
The incident comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and neighboring Palestinian territories, and the subsequent violence has resulted in the deaths of at least 230 people in Gaza, including 65 children, and 12 people in Israel, including two children.
These tensions have spurred “a dangerous and drastic surge in anti-Jewish hate” in major cities in the United States, according to the Anti-Defamation League.
“We are tracking acts of harassment, vandalism and violence as well as a torrent of online abuse,” ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said in a statement Thursday. “It’s happening around the world — from London to Los Angeles, from France to Florida, in big cities like NYC and in small towns, and across every social media platform.”
